as lean, handsome, very romantic, intellectual, adventurous,
poetic (5/1978).Arnold did not graduate from high school. He was 17 when came to
US. Doekle, his older brother, was well educated in Holland.Have group school photo with Arnold and Jenny in Luinjeberd. All
the aunts and uncles should have this photo as Aunt Alice had it
copied for everyone.Grandpa remembered saying goodbye to mother (left Holland?) (I
thought they all came together on SS Noordham). He never kissed
her goodbye. "Pake" (Fries for grandfather but meaning here his
father) disciplined when bad.Games: marbles, also using empty walnut shells. Ball with pretty
colors.Fell in canal, nearly drowned. Wore a little billowed dress (for a
couple of years) which saved him. (So, probably about 2 when this
happened?) Beppe slung him back and forth over her shoulder to
revive him. Had pneumonia a couple of times. Slept in bed in wall
given by Red Cross. You could close the doors. Had adenoids out
in Uttica (Jenny Douma 5/1978)."Pake" (Ralph Arnold Kuiper, grandfather) liked Alice best (Jenny
Douma 5//1978)."When I was born, mother was 32 and father was 34. Luinjeberd was
a one-horse town."Remember dairies, school, small church, creamery [has to be where he
was a cheesemaker, as it indicates on the ship's manifest that this
was his occupation as well].Jenny says they called him "Ake Pe" (practical joker) as he pulled
pranks (left Jenny in the outhouse one time). Ran once and almost

to church on hill in Clifton, N. J. Beppe didn't go-no time and no
clothes.Wasn't happy about Dick's conversion to Jehovah's Witness [so what?]
Didn't want his children to ever drink.
Said his father, Roelof, remembered when British invaded Netherlands
and made them register their names. Some of them made up names like
Bontenbal (many colored balls)for spite. Ergo some strange Dutch
names.By the way, grandpa said "Kuiper" in Fries means "cooper" as in
person who "hooped" barrels; i.e., pickles, pickled herring, etc.
Confirmed this after grandpa passed away with Avio translator.MOTHER'S FAVORITE STORIES: Used own money to get to U.S. Non-
Catholic town. Although Jenny says her mother (her mother's mother)
(Johanna Jenson married Rule Hilkema) was Catholic. Nilked cows to earn the
